HISTORICAL NOTES
The American Academy in Rome was founded in 1894 and is among the oldest American overseas research centers. It offers several residential fellowship programs in both the arts and the humanities, including the Rome Prize Fellowships, Affiliated Fellowships, and Residencies, and hosts Visiting Artists and Scholars. Throughout the years the Academy has hosted an active program of exhibitions, concerts, readings, lectures, conferences, seminars, performances and benefit events.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The photographs in this collection are part of the Institutional Archive and are constituted by photographs that depict inscriptions, medals, plaques in memory or in honor of people who in various ways have contributed to the Academy.
The collection has significant archival value for the Academy’s institutional history while presenting a chronological view of artistic trends and tastes over a 100-year period.

ARRANGEMENT AND PROCESSING INFORMATION
The images are organized by year and by the title of the event.
Prior to the early 2000s, the collection consists primarily of photographic prints; thereafter they are mainly born digital.
