BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Barbara Bini came to the American Academy in Rome in 1968 as a photographer for the Academy excavations at Cosa. She continued as an archaeological photographer under the tutelage of Ernst Nash, founder of the Fototeca Unione. In 1969, she worked at Athens for the American archaeological excavations in Agora. She returned to Italy to photograph archaeological sites such as Morgantina, in Sicily, and Pompeii. As a free-lance photographer, she collaborated with numerous Fellows and Residents of the Academy on projects in Rome, Southern Italy and North Africa.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Bini collection focuses on archaeological sites in Rome and the Roman world, and also includes images of Etruscan art, and Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture.

ARRANGEMENT AND PROCESSING INFORMATION
The digitized images in the DHC were scanned from negatives, where available, or from contact sheets. The digitized images on the DHC have been selected as samples.
In the Photo Archive are preserved 12 rolls of 35 mm. negatives and 43 sheets of contacts 6 x 6 cm. The contacts are accompanied by a letter by Dott. Adalberto Bini with the list of subjects reproduced and the note: "Contacts selected by Getty, 1988". These ca. 500 contacts are related to Southern France, mostly representing images on the same subjects as those of the cataloged and digitized images. Research Institutions' archives from which new prints were made include: The Getty Research Institute Special Collections; Deutsches Archaeologisches Institut (DAI), Athens and Rome; and the American School of Classical Studies, Athens.
